The glamour and buzz of Hollywood’s film community were palpable last Friday evening at the TCL Chinese Theatre. The atmosphere was heightened following the showing of Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, leaving audiences buzzing with cinematic appreciation. Amidst the celebration, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino took the opportunity to give fans a substantial glimpse into a beloved secondary character.

Following the screening and a Q&A session, Tarantino surprised the attendees by showing the first seventeen minutes of a new project: The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. This reveal focused on the return of the character Cliff Booth, who is portrayed by Brad Pitt. The film is a continuation of the world established in previous works, picking up action in 1977, a decade after the original timeline.

The fixer returns to Hollywood

The film’s plot outlines a world where Los Angeles no longer requires the services of a stuntman who can fight off hippies. However, Hollywood, it seems, always generates its own set of complications that require a unique kind of problem-solver. Cliff Booth is established as a versatile ‘fixer,’ capable of resolving issues for both the biggest names and the less scrupulous figures of the industry.

This fixer’s day-to-day life involves working in seemingly mundane roles, such as a projectionist or a bartender, yet his skills are always ready for more extraordinary, sometimes legally questionable, assignments. The narrative promises to delve into the ongoing, complicated existence of a man whose abilities are crucial to maintaining the illusion of Hollywood glamour.

A deep dive into the character’s lore

Tarantino himself shared insights into why he chose to revisit the character of Cliff Booth after the success of Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood. He explained that his fondness for the character was greatly influenced by Brad Pitt’s powerful performance. The director noted that he appreciated the quality of Pitt’s portrayal, comparing the character to a sort of “paperback hero.”

This inspiration suggests a desire to explore Cliff Booth through a series of adventures, imagining a collection of stories that follow the character’s unpredictable journey. The film is notable because it is directed by David Fincher, who was also present at the celebratory event.

Looking ahead to future adventures

The cinematic journey for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is set for a staggered release across different platforms. The film is scheduled to premiere in Imax cinemas on November 25th before making its way to the streaming service on December 23rd. Meanwhile, Tarantino also gave a brief update on his ongoing creative endeavours.

He mentioned his upcoming stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, which stars Sacha Baron Cohen and is slated to debut in London’s West End the following year. Despite the flurry of Hollywood activity, the writer reminded everyone that he remains perpetually occupied with the craft of storytelling. The continuing mis-adventures of Cliff Booth promise to prove that Hollywood will always have problems.
