The theatrical landscape in mainland China appeared to hit a noticeable lull over the last weekend, with the overall box office revenue dipping to a muted $18.6 million. This slowdown reflects a pronounced post-holiday slump across the major film releases, offering a stark contrast to the massive figures seen previously. Despite the general dip in consumer spending at the cinema, one particular horror franchise proved resilient enough to keep its grip on the top spot.
The horror reboot Resident Evil, a collaboration between Constantin Film and Sony Pictures, managed to secure the number one position at the box office for the third consecutive weekend. Over the three-day period spanning October 23rd to 25th, the film grossed $5.6 million (RMB 37.6 million), continuing its impressive run. Since its initial release during the Golden Week holiday corridor on October 5th, the movie has amassed a substantial cumulative haul of $64.8 million.
Who is holding down the fort?
The horror franchise remains the dominant force, but the competition for cultural attention is certainly fierce. Occupying the second position was the crime procedural drama Traces of Justice. This multi-decade investigation epic, directed by Chen Sicheng, has successfully maintained a strong presence since premiering on October 1st.
The drama, which chronicles an elite public security detective unraveling major criminal mysteries based on real-life cases, has amassed a whopping cumulative total of $92.4 million since its debut. Meanwhile, the third-place slot was held by the domestic body-swap comedy Mr. & Mrs. Pardon. This satirical feature, which stars comedic pair Shen Chunyang and Xiao Shenyang, generated $2.6 million over the three-day weekend, bringing its total gross to $55.5 million.
The enduring appeal of franchise hits
The box office data highlights the tremendous draw of reliable, established franchises. Resident Evil is not only performing well in its current window but has established a commanding presence since its initial rollout. This consistency suggests a strong, dedicated core audience eager to revisit familiar horror worlds.
In terms of longevity, the film All Wishes Come True!, a computer-animated fantasy comedy, has shown exceptional endurance. Since opening on July 18th, the long-running family hit has built up a substantial cumulative total of $306.6 million across an impressive fifteen weeks of continuous release.
Other blockbusters fighting for survival
Not all major films are resting on their laurels; some are continuing long runs. The war comedy-drama Once Upon a Time in the Middle East, directed by Wen Muye, collected $800,000 during its eleventh weekend of release. This enduring summer blockbuster has contributed to a cumulative total of $355.5 million since its launch on August 11th.
Even the fifth-place contender, All Wishes Come True!, pulled in $600,000 over its two-day weekend frame. These figures demonstrate that even in a period of overall market softening, certain high-concept, long-running properties continue to generate significant revenue streams.
The broader context reveals a challenging period for the industry as a whole. The overall year-to-date box office for mainland China reached $4.7 billion, yet this figure trailed the same period in the previous year by a notable 29.1%. Despite the dips and the economic slump, the cinematic appeal of the genre remains strong, keeping the killer franchise at number one.
