In a seemingly mundane English hotel, a young boy and his grandmother encountered a figure whose beauty masked a terrifying, ancient malice. She appeared charming and attractive, yet held within her the weight of untold power and terrible intent. This individual, known by the aliases Eva Ernst and Lilith, was the architect of a devastating plot targeting children across the entire nation. The air around her seemed to chill, promising a dark fantasy far beyond the scope of a simple narrative.

This figure, the Grand High Witch, stood as the absolute pinnacle of evil in the world of Roald Dahl’s The Witches. She was the supreme, all-powerful leader of every witch existing on Earth, commanding a global network of practitioners. She possessed an immense, hidden age, which she carefully concealed behind an alluring disguise. Her primary, sinister objective was the systematic eradication of every child in England. Her headquarters lay within a colossal castle situated in Norway, serving as the central nexus of her reign.

The initiation of a terrifying quest

The unfolding of this dark narrative began with a deceptively ordinary meeting between the boy and his grandmother within the confines of the hotel. The confrontation quickly revealed the true nature of the woman, who was described as ‘the most evil and appalling woman in the world.’ Her influence was so pervasive that she ruled over all witches, a group strictly forbidden from making contact with one another. The boy’s grandmother provided a critical counterpoint to this evil, as she was revealed to be a retired witch-hunter and the sworn nemesis of the Grand High Witch.

The sinister organisation of witches was exposed when the Grand High Witch first appeared at an annual convention hosted by the RSPCC. It was subsequently revealed that this seemingly innocuous organization was, in fact, a powerful coven of English witches. The leader’s deadly agenda was put into action using a specific, horrifying compound. She employed ‘Formula 86 Delayed Action Mouse-Maker,’ a potent agent designed to transform children into mice.

The varied faces of ancient evil

The Grand High Witch presented different facets depending on the medium through which her story was told. In the original book, she was portrayed as relatively asexual and possessed a striking beauty. However, in the 1990 film adaptation, she was reimagined as a seductive and predatory femme fatale, aided by an assistant named Susan Irvine. The 2020 film offered yet another depiction, showing her with elongating arms and only one toe on each foot, furthering her uncanny, otherworldly nature.

The origin of her menace was also hinted at in the narrative. Her accent suggested a possible original connection to Germany. In the book, her reign was absolute, and the knowledge of her identity was so restricted among her followers that it was implied that “Nobody in the world had the faintest idea who she was except the other witches.” This isolation of power underscored her incredible control over her global network of followers.

The ultimate transformation and downfall

The immense power of the Grand High Witch was only matched by the variety of her terrifying endings. In the book, her ultimate fate was sealed when she was destroyed after undergoing a terrifying transformation into brown mice. The adaptations offered more visceral, grotesque conclusions. The 1990 film saw her morph into a large, nasty, hairless rat, a creature reflecting her monstrous nature.

A significantly darker climax was presented in the 2020 film, where the Grand High Witch was trapped within an ice bucket and subsequently mauled by her own cat, Hades. Her power was seemingly insurmountable, yet ultimately susceptible to extreme, bizarre circumstances. Her influence was rooted in the absolute authority she held over her followers, who were bound by rules forbidding them from interacting outside of the structured conventions.

The enduring chill of the witch

The enduring presence of the Grand High Witch speaks to the universal fascination with ultimate, concealed evil. She represents the perfect antagonist: a figure of terrible power who operates behind a beautiful facade, capable of orchestrating global destruction. Her story reminds us that the most profound dangers often hide in plain sight, disguised by glamour and routine. Even today, the memory of the beautiful, murderous leader lurking in the guise of a respectable woman chills the imagination. After all, the most appalling woman in the world was merely waiting for the right convention.
