The roar of the crowd, the flash of thousands of cameras, and the spectacle of global athleticism define the Olympic Games. As the countdown to the next major sporting event reaches its final stages, the planning for the LA28 Olympics is entering its most visible phase. The scale of these ceremonies promises to be monumental, blending world-class entertainment with the prestige of international competition.

The responsibility for spearheading the LA28 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies has been handed to Kathleen Kennedy. This major transition means Kennedy will now assume the role previously held by Peter Rice as Head of Ceremonies and Content. The LA28 Games are scheduled to kick off on July 14, 2028, with the ceremonies taking place at the grand venues of SoFi Stadium and L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

From film empire to stadium spectacle

Kennedy arrives at this massive undertaking with a rich background in Hollywood’s most iconic franchises. She spent many years running the Star Wars saga, establishing herself as a formidable creative force in global entertainment. Currently operating as an independent producer, her previous tenure as the boss of LucasFilm laid a strong foundation for her storytelling abilities.

The importance of this role was recently highlighted by LA28 chair Casey Wasserman, who praised her innate talent. Wasserman stated that Kennedy is “one of Hollywood’s all-time greats,” recognising her unique gift for compelling narratives. Kennedy herself expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating she is thrilled to help bring the mega-event to life.

Building the cinematic production

The production team surrounding Kennedy is a blend of seasoned industry veterans and creative innovators. Alongside her, Ben Winston is set to serve as a LA28 ceremonies Executive Producer and Creative Director, ensuring a high level of creative vision. Scott Givens has been appointed as the Executive Producer of Production, handling the logistical weight of such a complex event.

The production itself is being supported by FulFive, which is a merged entity combining Fulwell Entertainment and FiveCurrents. Peter Rice, who is also involved in the LA Olympics opener and closer as an Executive Producer, is simultaneously advancing his career, taking on a new role as content chief for Netflix.

The scope of the Los Angeles event

The LA28 Games represent a significant moment for the city, marking the first Olympics held in Los Angeles since 1984. The competitions themselves will span a vast geographical and cultural scope. Kennedy noted that the events will cover fields ranging from Oklahoma City to the six designated Soccer/Football cities within LA28.

The entire sporting period is extensive, running from July 14 to July 30, 2028, followed by the Paralympic Games from August 15 to August 27, 2028. Kennedy, whose husband is Frank Marshall, shared a personal insight into the appeal of the Games, noting that sport is a great unifying experience for her and her family. “The Olympics have been a touchstone in my life,” she remarked.

With the grand scale confirmed, the world watches to see how this transition from blockbuster cinema to spectacular sporting theatre unfolds. The anticipation is palpable as LA28 gets ready to deliver a global masterpiece.
